Training Modules

Training Modules

Contact COVE, if interested in participating in any of the following Training Modules.

Independent Living Skills Modules
Each session is 2 hours long. Times will be arranged on an individual basis.

Adjustment to Vision Loss
Overview of the steps to independent living despite sight loss. Highlights of the training in the individual training modules. Registration for programs and services for the blind/visually impaired. Quick tips for immediate use in daily life.
4 sessions

Independent Traveling (not White Cane training)
Body protection, getting around indoors, building orientation, emergency exits, transportation options, use of local public transportation systems, and use of human guide.
4 sessions

Money Handling and Shopping
Money identification, use of credit/debit cards, banking, and shopping independently.
3 sessions

Personal Care, including Health concerns
Grooming techniques, clothing identification, talking assistive aids, and prescription mamagement.
2 sessions

Communications, Reading, and Writing
Accessible phones, accessing print and document handling, and reading & writing assistive aids
2 sessions

Household Management
Marking & labeling techniques, household organization, cleaning and laundry strategies
2 sessions

Food Preparation
General kitchen safety, food handling (cutting, slicing, chopping), microwave cooking, stovetop cooking, and baking.
6 sessions

Hobbies & Crafts
Adaptations and assistive aids for hobbies and crafting.
1 session

 

Assistive Technology Modules
Number of sessions varies dependent upon device. Times to be arranged on an individual basis.

Keyboarding
Learn the layout of the keyboard and build up accuracy and speed in typing.

Labeling Device
Care, features, and use of the labeling device assessed to be the most appropriate for the client, such as the PenFriend or ID Mate.

Voice Recorders
Care, features, and use of the recording device assessed to be the most appropriate for the client, such as the Wilson, Micro-Speak, Olympus, Victor Reader Stream or Blaze.

Video Magnifiers: Handheld & Desktop
Care, features, and use of the video magnifier assessed to be the most appropriate for the client. Set-up will be in the home of desktop models.

Tablets & Smartphone, including Apps for the Blind/Visually Impaired
Individual will become familiar with the use of the accessibility features of their phone or tablet. Useful apps for the blind/visually impaired will be included in the training.

Adaptive Computing
Individual will become familiar with the use of the accessibility features of the Operating System and adaptive software programs for the blind/visually impaired of their computer.

Artificial Intelligence Device
Set-up and use of the client’s Amazon Echo or Google Home device, along with its increasing number of skills.
